If you’re a fitness enthusiast, then you’ve probably heard of Prostar Whey protein. It’s one of the most popular and well-known brands in the Indian market.
But as with anything that’s popular, scammers are now targeting Prostar consumers by selling them fake protein powders.
In this blog post, we’ll share nine tricks that will help you determine if your jar of Prostar whey protein is original or fake.
We’ve also updated our list for 2022. So read on to learn more!
Step-1: Check Neck Band Seal & Jar Cap
All original Prostar whey protein jars will contain a transparent neck band seal.
This seal will be tightly fitted on the jar cap and will not contain any wear and tear.
The jar cap will also contain vertical grip bars for easy handling.
If your Prostar whey protein jar doesn’t have a proper neck band seal or is loose and flimsy, it might be fake.
Step-2: Check Importer Tag
Ultimate Nutrition Prostar whey protein is officially imported into India by the following three importers:
- Shri Balaji Overseas (GMC)
- Grace Enterprises (Formerly KAR)
- Paradise Nutrition
Shri Balaji Overseas (GMC) and Grace Enterprises have included a scratch code in their importer tags. These codes can only be verified once, making them a foolproof verification method.
Shri Balaji Overseas (GMC) has also included a golden hologram on their jars.
The supplier name mentioned on the importer tag should be Ultimate Nutrition. Your jar could be fake if you see any other supplier name mentioned on the tag.
If you have a Shri Balaji Overseas (GMC) importer tag, you can send the code to +91-8510012244 for verification.
If you have a Grace Enterprises importer tag, you can verify the code at this link.
Ultimate Nutrition maintains a list of unauthorized importers here. If your jar has an importer mentioned on this list, then your product might be an unauthorized import.
Original Prostar whey protein jars that are imported officially will have India-specific packaging that will include the phrase “For Export Only.”
If your Prostar whey protein jar doesn’t have an importer tag, then it’s quite likely a grey market product or a fake.
Step-3: Check The Fonts
All original Prostar whey protein jars currently include two different kinds of font styling depending on the flavor.
Both the styles mentioned above are original.
If your Prostar whey protein jar has incorrect font styling or spelling mistakes, there is a high chance it’s fake.
Step-4: Check For The Registered Trademark Symbol & FSSAI Green Dot
Ultimate Nutrition and Prostar are registered trademarks.
They will include a ® symbol in front of them.
A green dot will also be present on the jar as per FSSAI regulations. This dot indicates that the product is vegetarian.
If your Prostar whey protein jar is missing these symbols, it’s most likely a fake product.
Step-5: Check The Flavor, Ingredients List & Weight
According to the official Ultimate Nutrition website, Prostar whey protein is available in 14 different flavors.
You can check the list of flavors here.
Please note that flavors like Chocolate and Vanilla that include the word CRÉME will have the first alphabet “E” will have a slanting dash over it.
The earlier ingredients list mentioned Milk and Soy, but now Soy has been removed.
Always check Ultimate Nutrition’s official website to make sure your jar has the correct weight. Prostar is currently available in 1lbs, 2lbs, 5.28lbs, and 10lbs variants.
If your Prostar whey protein jar has an incorrect flavor, ingredients, or weight, it might be a fake product.
Step-6: Check Bar Code & Manufacturer’s Details
All original Prostar whey protein jars include a bar code that shop employees use to scan and enter product information in their system.
This code will be on the extreme bottom left of the jar label; you can scan this code using an Android or an iOS App.
Please note that bar codes can be duplicated easily, and scanning them does not give foolproof results.
You can spot the manufacturer’s address above the bar code. It should mention Made in USA since Prostar whey protein is officially manufactured in Farmington, Connecticut (CT).
Suppose your Prostar whey protein jar does not have a bar code or contains an Indian manufacturer’s address. In that case, it’s quite likely a fake product.
Step-7: Check The Silver Strip
Original Prostar whey protein jars will have a silver holographic strip present at the base of the label.
It will shine when exposed to light and contain the phrase Ultimate Nutrition along with star-like Patterns.
If your Prostar whey protein jar is missing this feature or has a dull strip, it might be fake.
Step-8: Check The Base Of The Jar
The lot number, manufacturing, and expiry information will be printed at the bottom of the jar with yellow inkjet.
The manufacturing and expiry date will be written in MM/YY formats.
Original Prostar whey protein powder has a shelf life of 3yrs so these dates will be 3yrs apart.
The base of the jar will also include a recycle triangle with the digit 1 inside it. The phrase “PETE” which stands for Polyethylene terephthalate, will be mentioned below it.
Step-9: Check Inner Seal & Vacuum Barrier
All original Prostar whey protein jars will have a high-quality inner seal and a cardboard vacuum barrier which keeps the powder fresh and prevents leakage during transport.
There will be 5 dots on both the inner seal and the vacuum barrier in the shape of a pentagram.
This inner seal will have the phrase “SEALED for YOUR PROTECTION” printed with red ink.
It’s also important to note that the inner seal will have 3 sealing points.
If your Prostar whey protein jar is missing these features, it may be fake.
Prostar Whey Fake Jar Example
In this section, we’ll analyze some Prostar whey fake jar images we collected from the internet.
As you can see above, the word “CRÉME” has been misspelled as “CREAM.” This is a major red flag, showing that the above jar is fake.
If you look at the jar color, it’s much lighter than an original Prostar whey protein jar. This is an indication that the above jar is fake.
If you find a missing inner seal or scoop like in the jar shown above, you can be sure it’s fake.
Fake Prostar whey protein jars do not have a proper vacuum barrier which is why you’ll find that powder usually leaks out.
Whenever you notice a major powder leakage upon opening the jar, you can be sure that it’s a fake jar.
There has been a recent trend where expired Prostar whey protein jars are being resold by reprinting manufacturing and expiry information. As you can see in the above image, the dates have been poorly printed and are hardly visible.
These jars are quite difficult to detect as they are usually in the original packaging and do not cause any major side effects upon consumption. Therefore, the only way to detect them is to carefully examine the base of the jar.
So if you spot poorly printed dates at the base, you can be sure it’s a fake jar.
Here is a quick summary of our observations:
- Doesn't have any spelling mistakes.
- The jar is violet in color.
- Has a proper inner seal and scoop.
- A vacuum barrier protects against leakage.
- Mfg and Exp dates are properly printed with yellow ink.
- Contains spelling mistakes.
- The jar is blue in color.
- The inner seal and scoop are missing.
- Improper vacuum barrier causes leakage.
- Mfg and Exp dates are not properly visible.
